Energy Secretary Designates Helium as Critical Material

Secretary Wright explained, “Helium is essential to producing the semiconductors and advanced technologies that power our economy.“

The U.S. Department of Energy announced the designation of helium as a critical material under the Energy Act of 2020. The department stated that helium “meets the statutory definition of a critical material due to its essential role in American manufacturing and growing exposure to supply chain risks.” Helium is typically used in semiconductor production, with substitutes unavailable in many situations.

“President Trump is bringing back America’s manufacturing industry, and that means making sure we have the materials needed to build things in America again,” said Energy Secretary Chris Wright. “Helium is essential to producing the semiconductors and advanced technologies that power our economy. By designating helium as a critical material, we are taking another step toward securing our supply chains, creating American jobs, and ensuring the United States leads the world in energy and technological innovation.”

The U.S. has significant deposits of helium-rich natural gas that have yet to be tapped. With global demand for helium increasing faster than production rates, supply risks for American manufacturing continue to be a concern.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Wright oversees the Energy Department’s efforts to support domestic production and manufacturing.
  • For President Trump as he strategizes improvements in supply chains for national security.
  • For U.S. manufacturers and producers as they seeks methods to obtain helium.
